Itinerary

Yungang Grottoes

Our driver and English speaking tour guide will pickup from your hotel in Datong at 8:30am. First head to the Hanging Temple ( 悬空寺 or known as Hanging Monastery) in Mount Hengshan, the temple is 65 km away from Datong and 1.5 hours drive.

The 5th-century Hanging Monastery is built into a cliff 75 meters above the ground. It is ranked among the Top 10 Precarious Buildings in the world by Times Magazine. The temple is the only one built in honor of Sakyamuni, Laozi, and Confucius in China.

Have lunch in a local Chinese restaurant.

Then continue your journey to UNESCO-listed Yungang Grottoes （云冈石窟）. The site, 16 km west of Datong City, features 252 caves and 51,000 statues, an outstanding Buddhist cave art from the 5th and 6th centuries. The grottoes spread around 1 km from east to west. You will spend about 2 hours visiting the site.

When the tour ends, transfer back to you hotel in Datong.
